The challenge

A rapid expansion of the charging infrastructure poses major challenges for local authorities, planning engineers and grid operators. Limited space, expectations of architecture that conforms to the cityscape and safety concerns when installing the connection cabinets need to be addressed.

The EK 880 underground distribution system from Langmatz fulfils all of these requirements. A complete service entrance solution based on the familiar polycarbonate manholes completely replaces an aboveground cabinet. The security aspect is taken into account with alternative locking variants. They protect against unauthorised opening. Gas struts allow authorised persons quick access. The distribution system provides installation space for the service entrance box and a metering point for direct measurement. An submersion hood protects against water ingress.

All communal equipment such as WLAN or critical infrastructure for smart city requirements can be integrated.

However, there is a high risk of overvoltage for the sensitive electronic components of the charging infrastructure and electric vehicles. High economic losses for servicing, lack of functionality and even loss of image are possible serious consequences.Series of standards such as DIN VDE 0100-443 and DIN VDE 0100-722 also require measures to protect against transient overvoltages.

The solution

The EK 880 system solution has all the necessary electrical protective devices, including powerful lightning current and surge protection. Here, Langmatz relies on powerful, proven and high-quality protection solutions from DEHN.

Incoming power supply lines are protected with DEHNvap EMOB. Specially designed for charging infrastructure, the combined arrester protects with an energy-coordinated Type 1+2+3 protective effect based on RAC spark gap technology with wave breaker function.

In order to fulfil all EMC requirements, feed-through wiring is implemented with the STAK 25 pin-shaped terminal.

For complete lightning equipotential bonding, the copper-based data and communication lines are optionally wired with BLITZDUCTORconnect or DEHNpatch.
