Protection concept for Ingolstadt Hospital

The engineering firm PEMA developed innovative planning concepts for the electrical building equipment and conveyor system of Ingolstadt Hospital, while DEHN, as an expert in lightning and surge protection, provided reliable protection measures. Thanks to the successful integration, Ingolstadt Hospital can operate its technical infrastructure without disruption.

The challenge

Ingolstadt Hospital is one of the largest municipal hospitals in Bavaria and is one of the pioneers of digitalisation in the healthcare sector. It was therefore very important to take special protective measures with regard to lightning protection, surge protection, occupational safety and earthing when renovating and adapting the power supply and infrastructure.

Advancing digitalisation and the use of networked components require special protective measures to prevent damage to vital technology and supply and communication structures caused by lightning and surges.

As part of the general renovation of Ingolstadt Hospital, various areas such as the operating theatres, neonatology, maternity ward, clinical medical service, on-call service, central sterilisation, logistics and the central main energy supply (emergency power system, MV, LVMDB) were renovated and integrated into the hospital's technical infrastructure in the first construction phase.

The engineering firm PEMA was responsible for planning the electrical building equipment, the conveyor system with automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and the integration of the low-current systems such as fire alarm and emergency radio systems, voice alarm systems, nurse call and network technology, with a particular focus on the protective measures against lightning and overvoltage effects. The first construction phase has now been completed.

The solution

As part of PEMA's planning work for the general redevelopment of Ingolstadt Hospital, it was of central importance to develop reliable protection concepts against lightning and overvoltage hazards.DEHN, as an expert in lightning and surge protection, offered solutions and products that were integrated into the plans to successfully confront the challenges. DEHN's scope of services that contributed to the project included both surge protection and external lightning protection. DEHN offers a broad portfolio of solution concepts, product ranges and specific products in these areas.

With regard to surge protection, DEHN's innovative products and solutions ensure that sensitive electronic devices and infrastructure are protected against damaging surges. The use of high-quality surge protective devices ensures a reliable and continuous power supply, which is particularly important in critical areas such as operating theatres, intensive care units and medical equipment.

DEHN also offered customised solutions in the field of external lightning protection to protect the Ingolstadt Hospital from the effects of direct lightning discharges. The use of lightning protection systems (such as insulated air-termination systems and earthing measures) ensures the targeted dissipation of lightning current in order to prevent damage to the building structure, electrical equipment and electronic systems. DEHN's solutions and products offer the following advantages:

  • Reliable protection: DEHN products provide reliable protection against the effects of lightning discharges and surges to ensure the availability and functionality of technical equipment in hospitals.
  • Professional planning: With its expertise and experience, DEHN supports the planning of customised solutions that meet the individual requirements of Ingolstadt Hospital.
  • Quality products: DEHN offers high-quality surge and lightning protection devices that guarantee a long service life and high efficiency.
  • Compliance and standards: DEHN ensures that the solutions comply with the applicable standards and regulations to guarantee the safety and conformity of Ingolstadt Hospital.

By integrating DEHN's solution concepts, product ranges and products, the engineering firm PEMA was able to incorporate effective protective measures against lightning and surge hazards into the plans and thus ensure that the technical infrastructure of the Ingolstadt Hospital is protected and operates reliably and trouble-free.
